Virginia’s legislature gave initial approval to a proposed state constitutional amendment that would permit Democratic officeholders to redraw congressional districts before the 2026 House elections.
The state Senate on Friday voted 21-16 along party lines to authorize the legislature to modify districts and bypass the state’s redistricting commission, which voters approved in 2020. The state House agreed to the amendment in a 51-42 vote Wednesday.
The legislature would have to pass the amendment a second time early next year, then have Virginia voters approve it. Democrats are favored to add to their 51-48 majority in state House elections on Tuesday ...
