ChinesePresident Xi Jinping received an elaborate welcome upon arriving in North Korea, kicking off a visit aimed at reasserting Beijing’s influence over an emboldened neighbor with an expanding nuclear arsenal and a deepening alliance with Russia.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his wife, Ri Sol Ju, personally greeted Xi as he arrived Monday in Pyongyang, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. The leaders then proceeded to Kim Il Sung Square for a formal welcoming ceremony featuring a 21-gun salute and bilingual banners proclaiming an “unbreakable” friendship.
