Anthropic Seeks Appeal of Authors’ Class in AI Training Dispute

Anthropic PBC told a federal appeals court that a lower court botched their decision to certify a class of authors in its generative AI copyright suit, putting “inordinate pressure on Anthropic to settle notwithstanding the merits.”

The “rushed” certification of authors whose books Anthropic downloaded from pirated websites glossed over key differences that could turn their legal analyses, the company said in its petition to the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to quickly hear an appeal. Courts routinely disfavor certification of classes in copyright cases because of various individualized factors—and this case is no different, it said. ...
