The IRS will keep all of its taxpayer assistance centers open through tax filing season, according to a person familiar with the situation.
The Trump administration said Feb. 25 it planned to terminate the leases on 128 offices that host taxpayer assistance centers and five that include call sites—a move meant to align with its goals to shrink the government and cut costs.
Shuttering the taxpayer assistance centers drew pushback from tax professionals and taxpayer advocates who said low income taxpayers and those who are victims of identity theft would be hit hardest by the closures.
