Cox Hit With $1 Billion Loss in Sony-Warner Copyright Trial (2)

Cox Communications Inc. must pay $1 billion to music publishers, including Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Bros. Records Inc. and Universal Music Corp., for failing to shut down online accounts of repeat copyright infringers, a federal jury decided.

Jurors in Alexandria, Virginia, on Thursday found the internet service provider willfully enabled its subscribers to copy more than 10,000 works over peer-to-peer networks and awarded the music publishers $99,830.29 per infringement.

It’s the fifth-largest verdict in the U.S. in 2019, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
