The New World screwworm is back in the US, and the infection of a dog in New Mexico is raising concerns about the risks to animals beyond cattle.

The US cases so far have mostly involved calves, but have also included a dog and a goat. Pigs, horses, deer, cats and even humans have also been afflicted with screwworm in other outbreaks, including the current one in Mexico, according to the US Department of Agriculture.
