Adelita Grijalva Poised to Be Arizona’s First Latina in Congress

Arizona Democrat Adelita Grijalva is on a glidepath to succeed her late father in the House and become the first Latina to represent her state in Congress, where she plans to continue his progressive legacy.

Grijalva, a former county supervisor and school board member from the Tucson area, is overwhelmingly favored to win a special election Tuesday and join the closely divided House, where Raúl Grijalva (D) served more than 22 years before dying of cancer in March.

Her win would give the 119th Congress a record 20 Latinas, according to the Center for American Women and Politics.
