The fate of consequential California legislation on artificial intelligence, health care, and energy rests with Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) as he faces a deadline by the end of the month to sign or veto about 1,000 bills.
“I’ve got 991 things on my mind,” he told reporters Wednesday.
The measures from the state legislature, which adjourned early Sunday, have seen heavy lobbying campaigns by a technology industry that is central to the state’s economy; health insurers with significant political clout; and labor unions that are an influential constituency with state Democrats.
