New Hampshire and Maryland are the latest states to curb their own government agencies’ use of artificial intelligence amid concern that the technology will adversely effect civil liberties and privacy.
Both states enacted laws in July placing safeguards on the use of AI. That followed enaction of a similar measure in Connecticut, which last year approved a first-in-nation law (S.B. 1103) requiring public agencies to conduct inventories of their existing systems while they assess potential risks from AI tools, including bias in decision-making for government services.
