Amtrak officials made the case for more money from federal coffers as they testified before lawmakers Wednesday, citing record-high ridership projections bogged down by soaring cybersecurity, inflation and operational costs.

The House hearing served as the latest stage for the clash between the rail company and GOP lawmakers who have scrutinized Amtrak’s losses and reliance on federal dollars. House Republicans are expected to propose their fiscal 2025 transportation funding plan later this month, and Amtrak spending and proposed cuts were at the center of its money debates last year that dragged on for months.
