More than 180 House lawmakers signed onto letters urging top congressional appropriators to fund the Pell Grant program as the low-income student aid initiative faces a shortfall of billions of dollars.
While Republican signatories are generally calling for robust funding, Democrats are also pushing for wholesale changes to the financial aid program’s funding to secure its longevity.
Democrats specifically want to automatically adjust the maximum grant amount to inflation and secure permanent, or mandatory, funding rather than relying on annual appropriations. They also want to see the maximum award amount doubled to $14,790.
