Aviation System ‘At Risk’ as Shutdown Threat, FAA Furloughs Loom

Imminent lapses in aviation security inspections, airport improvements and air traffic controller training are escalating industry concerns as lawmakers run up against a double-whammy of FAA legislative deadlines.

Lawmakers have until the end of Saturday to avert both a broad government shutdown and avoid a lapse in expiring Federal Aviation Administration authorities. The agency’s plan, approved Friday, says the FAA would furlough about 38% of its workforce and halt a slew of work, including the development of new technologies and rulemakings.
