BGOV Bill Analysis: H.R. 261, Undersea Cable Permitting

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration couldn’t require additional permits, including special use permits, for installing or maintaining previously approved undersea fiber optic cables in national marine sanctuaries under H.R. 261.

The restriction would apply if a federal or state agency has already issued a permit or similar approval. The bill also would repeal language barring activities approved under a special use permit from destroying or damaging national marine sanctuary resources. It also would repeal a requirement that SUPs must be renewed every five years.
