BGOV Bill Analysis: H.R. 3123, Veteran Pensions for Families

The Veterans Affairs Department would have to pay accrued pension benefits to a veteran’s family or estate after their death under a modified version of H.R. 3123.

The bill aims to address rare instances in which the VA grants a veteran’s pension application, but the veteran dies before the first payment is delivered. Under current law, the VA can’t re-issue the pension payment to the surviving family or estate, according to a House Veterans’ Affairs Committee report on the measure.
