Enhancements to Affordable Care Act premium tax credits enacted during the Covid-19 pandemic would be revived for three years, through December 2028, under a modified version of H.R. 1834.

The enhanced subsidies, which lapsed Dec. 31, played a central role in the record 43-day government shutdown this fall. Democrats insisted on extending the expanded credits, saying a lapse would cause insurance premiums to surge for tens of millions of people across the country. Conservatives have opposed an extension, calling it an expensive subsidy that benefits wealthy households and insurance companies.
