The Bureau of Indian Affairs would have to adhere to set timelines for reviewing and processing mortgage packages involving property on tribal land under S. 723.

Lenders must submit a mortgage package to BIA for approval for mortgages on tribal land, which consists of the proposed agreement and other related documents.

The bill aims to ease delays in BIA’s approval process, which would encourage more lenders to provide mortgages across Native American land, according to a Senate Indian Affairs Committee report on the measure.
