President Donald Trump fulfilled a campaign promise last month when he signed an executive order to dismantle the Education Department.
The department was authorized as a cabinet-level agency nearly 50 years ago and has long been targeted by conservatives who view it as federal overreach and wasteful spending.
Secretary Linda McMahon said she’s ready to enact Trump’s vision, though abolishing the department entirely would require an act of Congress. Democrats, and even some vulnerable Republicans, are unlikely to support legislation to shutter the department.
