Lawmakers advanced a flurry of child online safety measures in Congress this month, but key disagreements between House and Senate Republicans could derail their hopes for tighter regulations on social media.

The “Kids Online Safety Act” is one of several proposals aimed at protecting children online, including by restricting messaging and addictive app features on minors’ accounts. The House Energy and Commerce Committee approved the bill along party lines on March 5, as part of a broader package called the “Kids Internet and Digital Safety Act” or “KIDS Act” (H.R. 7757).
