Bill to Return Whole Milk to School Lunches Advances in Senate

Senate Agriculture Committee members advanced by voice vote Tuesday legislation that would reintroduce fattier milk options to federally paid school lunches for the first time in more than a decade.

The bipartisan legislation (S. 222) now awaits a floor vote in the Senate and also the House, where House Agriculture panel members advanced that chamber’s version of the bill (H.R. 649) earlier this year. Lawmakers are attempting to let schools offer students whole or reduced-fat milk under the Agriculture Department’s National School Lunch Program, which provides free or reduced-price meals to millions of children.
