Bipartisan Group Urges Leaders to Forgo Extension of Spy Law

A bipartisan group of more than 40 House lawmakers are pressing their leaders to oppose an extension of a controversial spy law as part of a government spending package that includes funding for the Pentagon and intelligence community.

Congress has already extended Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act until April 19. But that deadline is fast approaching amid a tight legislative schedule and very narrow voting margins in the Republican-led House. Speaker Mike Johnson (La.) already had to abandon an attempt at overhauling the spy law last month.
