The federal government would help pay for cleaning up hazardous debris after wildfires under bipartisan Senate legislation introduced Tuesday.
Wildfires leave behind burned structures and vehicles that can release dangerous chemicals into air, water, and soil, and produce harmful ash and dust. If the damage in a disaster doesn’t meet the threshold for a major disaster declaration, communities can’t access federal funds to safely dispose of wreckage, leaving the full cost to states and residents.
The legislation seen by Bloomberg Government from Sens.
