Sen. Cory Booker broke the record for the longest individual speech in US Senate history, spending 25 hours and 5 consecutive minutes on the floor to protest actions from President Donald Trump’s administration and Republicans in Congress.
Booker defeated the record previously held by the late Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who was fighting against the Civil Rights Act of 1957. It took about 68 years for a senator to dismantle that record – and it was done by a Black Democratic senator from New Jersey who evoked civil rights during his marathon speech.
