Buttigieg Empowers States to Probe Airline Service Violations

The Transportation Department is tapping more than a dozen state attorneys general to help crack down on airlines that violate consumer protection laws.

The new partnership, which Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced Tuesday, would offer 18 states an avenue to investigate airlines and report violations to the federal government to expedite enforcement, boosting the states’ voice after an unfruitful push for more power from Congress. State attorneys general would also be able to report airlines to the department that fail to respond to their requests for information under the plan.
