California AG Conducts Inquiry Into Location Data Industry

California Attorney General Rob Bonta (D) announced Monday an investigative sweep into the location data sharing industry for potential privacy law violations.

Bonta sent letters to mobile app providers that share such personal data with data brokers and advertisers, both of which were also targeted. The inquiry focuses on how the businesses offer and implement consumers’ right to opt out of the sale of such data and their right to limit that data’s use. Those businesses could be in violation of the California Consumer Privacy Act, he said.
