Lawmakers axed California’s ability to impose tougher auto emissions standards — a move that threatens to scramble decades of congressional and legal precedent and derail multiple states’ efforts to curb air pollution.

Senate Republicans Thursday rescinded California’s Biden-era authority under the Clean Air Act in a series of votes (H.J.Res. 88), (H.J.Res. 87, H.J.Res. 89), sending the measures to President Donald Trump’s desk for his signature.
