California will be the largest state to require some health insurance plans cover in vitro fertilization after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a new law on infertility treatment Sunday.
The measure (SB 729) requires large-group health insurance plans, such as those purchased by mid-size and large employers, to cover IVF starting in mid-2025.
The legislation, sponsored by state Sen. Caroline Menjivar (D), would also broaden the definition of infertility, scrapping an existing definition that critics contend wrongly excludes LGBTQ+ Californians.
