Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said California and other states risk losing transportation funding unless they crack down on foreign drivers who receive commercial drivers’ licenses without legal authorization to work in the country.

Increased restrictions on commercial drivers’ licenses will address what he called a “national emergency” following a series of traffic crashes involving foreign truckers, Duffy said at a Friday press conference, noting there have been at least five fatal crashes involving non-resident commercial drivers since January.
