California Labor Seeks Sweeping Oversight of AI in Workplace

California labor groups are pushing for first-in-the-nation legislation that would require businesses to notify workers when they are using AI in the workplace.

Businesses with state-based employees would have to disclose uses of automated tools for tasks such as performance evaluations or work scheduling to them, under the measure (SB 7) by state Sen. Jerry McNerney (D).

The bill goes beyond other states’ efforts to combat bias in AI systems, particularly in hiring, and would provide workers with expansive rights to know and challenge major employment-related decisions made by automated systems. It also would require human oversight on ...
