California Lawmakers Beef Up AI Safety Bill Over Tech Opposition

Legislation that would force large AI developers to publish their safety protocols was advanced by a California Assembly committee despite renewed tech objections.

The Assembly Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee approved the bill (SB 53) by a 9-0 vote after adding more requirements, such as mandating third-party audits for developers.

“That is fundamentally the basis of this bill, is that they will be defining their own safety protocols,” said Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D), who chairs the committee. “They will be making those public, and then they will have to follow them.”
