California Opt-Out Web Browser Requirements Approved by Panel

Legislation that would make it easier for Californians to block the sale or sharing of their web browser data was approved by a state Assembly panel Tuesday.

The Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee advanced the bill (AB 566), which would make California the first state to mandate such requirements on browsers such as Alphabet Inc.'s Google Chrome. Tech businesses opposing the measure generate significant revenue from advertising, which uses collected user data for targeted displays.
