California Republican Gallagher Elected to LaMalfa’s House Seat

California Republican James Gallagher won a special election Tuesday to serve the remainder of the 119th Congress in a conservative district Democrats redrew to favor them in the November election for a full term.

Gallagher, a state assemblyman, had 62% of the vote in incomplete returns over state Sen. Mike McGuire (D) and educator Audrey Denney (D) in the 1st District, which presently takes in mostly rural northern California and backed President Donald Trump by 25 percentage points in the 2024 election.
