California would become the largest state to require some health plans to cover infertility treatment, including in vitro fertilization, under legislation sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday.
The state Senate cleared the bill (SB 729) by a 30-8 vote that would require large group health insurance plans, such as those purchased by mid-size and large employers, to cover treatments including IVF starting in mid-2025. Small group plans, purchased by small businesses, would have to offer such coverage as an option.
