California Takes Tentative Step Toward Self-Driving Trucks

Heavy-duty driverless trucks appear on the path to eventually make long-haul deliveries on California roads despite a strong opposition campaign from organized labor.

The state’s Department of Motor Vehicles on Oct. 14 closed its comment period on draft rules for testing and permitting driverless trucks after years of meetings about the technology and the approval of smaller robotaxis, which already operate on the streets of San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The DMV is now expected to launch a formal rulemaking process, but there’s no firm timetable on when that process might begin, a spokesperson for the agency said.
