California’s Newsom Sets August Election to Fill Swalwell Seat

California Gov. Gavin Newsom set a special election for Aug. 18 to fill the House seat vacated Tuesday by Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell, who resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

The congressman stepped down after several women accused him of sexual misconduct in news reports over the last week. Swalwell has denied the allegations, but resigned after the House Ethics Committee opened an investigation into his conduct. Swalwell also ended his campaign to succeed Newsom as governor.
