Low fundraising and poll numbers forced a politically seasoned, establishment Democrat out of the high-profile Senate race in Maine, leaving a political newcomer to try and topple Republican incumbent Susan Collins.

Maine Governor Janet Mills suspended her Senate campaign Thursday. She had the backing of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), but her candidacy had split the party, with the likes of Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) breaking ranks to endorse her opponent.
