Differing requirements for how businesses collect and use consumer data are likely to expand this year through comprehensive privacy legislation filed in at least seven states.
The measures would add to 20 state laws already on the books that give individuals more control over their personal information, such as the ability to know what data a company collects and opt out of certain uses. The laws apply broadly across industries and demand a close look by businesses at each state’s nuances in the absence of a federal privacy standard that industry groups have long advocated for.
