Congress Approves Six-Week Patch of Controversial Spy Powers

Congress approved a six-week extension of a controversial spy powers law Thursday as members of the House and Senate have struggled to reauthorize the tool intelligence agencies use to track terrorists.

The US House approved the extension by a 261-111 vote. The extension will now go to President Donald Trump’s desk for signature.

The Senate earlier in the day had backed the short-term extension of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which allows US intelligence agencies to collect the communications of foreigners overseas. The authority was set to expire Thursday at midnight and will now expire June 12. ...
