Conservatives Demand Medicaid, Tax, Gun Changes to Move Big Bill

Conservative lawmakers who stalled a tax and spending package Friday are demanding changes to the package including hastening Medicaid work requirements, a quicker phaseout of clean-energy tax credits, and cuts to taxes on gun sales.

Four hard-line conservatives blocked the House’s budget reconciliation package — comprising the bulk of President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda — in a committee vote. The Budget Committee’s 16-21 vote against the bill was a show of force by a hard-right group of lawmakers who held up the bill’s progress and could pose a threat once it gets to the House floor.
