Cost, Health Concerns Pegged to Trump’s Fuel Efficiency Move

Environmentalists, public health experts, and religious leaders protested a Trump administration proposal to ease fuel efficiency standards, arguing the move would boost transportation costs and worsen pollution.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration hosted a hearing Wednesday on the proposed change where just a few out of more than 70 witnesses praised the move. But industry groups applauded it.

“At a time when health care premiums have skyrocketed due to the inaction on health care tax credits, Americans cannot afford additional stresses on their pocketbook,” Liz Scott, a lobbyist for the American Lung Association, said at the hearing.
