Public health officials are calling for new funding to modernize health data systems and rebuild the public health workforce, yet lawmakers have little interest in fighting the spread of Covid-19.
The US faces its largest surge of Covid-19 infections since 2021, but the virus is no longer a priority for lawmakers on either side of the political gamut, Marcus Plescia, the chief medical officer for the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, said.
“Congress, like many people in our society, have moved on from the pandemic,” Plescia said. “The problem is, the pandemic isn’t gone.”
