Underwood to Be Key Democrat on Homeland Security Funding (1)

Rep. Lauren Underwood will be the top House Democrat on Homeland Security funding negotiations, replacing Rep. Henry Cuellar, who is stepping down as he faces a federal indictment.

Underwood (D-Ill.) will serve as the ranking member of the House Appropriations Homeland Security Subcommittee, two House Democratic aides said Friday. Cuellar is stepping down from the role, at least temporarily, after federal officials charged him and his wife with bribery, unlawful foreign influence, and money laundering.

Underwood, 37, becomes the youngest current ranking member of an appropriations subcommittee. She’s the next senior-most member on the subcommittee, after Cuellar.
