Cycle of Distrust Hinders Shutdown Solutions: Congress Tracker

The government shutdown turns three weeks old Wednesday and the Senate is still driving in circles.

Senators return tonight for another vote on the House-passed funding bill that’s failed 10 times before. The House is out again, as it has been since Sept. 19.

Senate Democrats, meanwhile, are also pushing a vote this week aimed at blocking President Donald Trump from deploying the military in Venezuela without congressional authorization. It’s also certain to fail.

While seemingly unrelated, that effort illustrates the distrust underlying the shutdown, making a resolution so difficult and leaving little hope that the record-setting standoff is anywhere ...
