DC Mayor Strikes Careful Tone Toward Trump Amid Federal Push

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser maintained her conciliatory tone toward Republicans at a House Oversight Committee hearing Thursday, telegraphing a desire to cooperate with President Donald Trump despite his recent threats to federalize the capital.

Bowser, a Democrat, urged lawmakers to fully fund an expected request from Trump to “beautify” Washington, a shared priority between local leaders and the federal government. While defending DC’s right to govern itself, Bowser also reiterated that a “surge” of resources from Trump — which Democrats widely panned — helped accelerate the city’s crime reduction.
