Deep Cuts to GAO Proposed in House Legislative Spending Measure

House Republicans proposed significant cuts to funding for the Government Accountability Office in a spending bill released Sunday, as the Trump administration battles the nonpartisan watchdog.

The House Appropriations Committee’s $6.7 billion fiscal 2026 Legislative Branch spending bill would provide about $51 million less than enacted this year, according to committee Republicans’ summary. The Legislative Branch Subcommittee is scheduled to consider the bill Monday.

Funding for the GAO would be cut by roughly half under the legislation, which would provide $415.4 million for the office, $396.5 million less than the level enacted for fiscal 2025 and $500 million less ...
