Defense Authorization Bill Mandates Study After Air Collision

The Department of Defense would have 180 days to study the feasibility of installing more safety technology in military helicopters under a $901 billion defense authorization bill released Sunday.

The proposed report would analyze for Congress how installing the technology known as Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast would affect combat readiness, civilian safety and department finances. Its inclusion in the appropriations measure comes after an US Army Black Hawk helicopter operating without the technology collided with a passenger jet in January near Washington’s Ronald Reagan National Airport.
