Democrats Seek to Force Vote to Fund DHS Without Money for ICE

House Democrats are launching a discharge petition in a long-shot effort to fund the Department of Homeland Security without money for immigration enforcement activities.

The petition would force a vote on legislation to reopen DHS without funding for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement if it gathers 218 signatures, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced Monday. Democrats have demanded changes to immigration enforcement policy in any DHS funding bill, though there’s been little to no progress on their negotiations with Republicans and the White House. The partial shutdown of the department has dragged on for more than a month.
