DHS Nominee Gets Bipartisan Warning Against Suspending Habeas

President Donald Trump’s pick to be the Department of Homeland Security’s top lawyer faced words of caution from both sides of the aisle on the administration’s consideration of suspending habeas corpus to fast-track deportations.

“If there’s an attempt to suspend habeas corpus even though it’s in the Constitution, you will find not only whole-hearted opposition to it, you will find full-throated opposition to it from me,” Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Chairman Rand Paul (R-Ky.) told James Percival during a hearing Thursday.
