DOE Invests $29 Million in Geothermal Systems Research

Research on enhanced geothermal energy will receive $29 million in funding for projects in Nevada and Utah, the Energy Department announced Aug. 31.

The funding will go to Sandia National Laboratories and the University of Utah for research on enhanced geothermal systems, which use create renewable energy from the Earth’s heat in places without naturally occurring geothermal resources.

The Sandia team will conduct research in Fallon, Nev. The University of Utah will work at a site in Milford, Utah. The two sites will use the funding to prepare for a competitive third phase of the program to designate one ...
