Dueling Stopgaps Set Stage for Shutdown

Republicans and Democrats are rallying around competing plans to fund the government beyond Sept. 30, with little room for compromise.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is seeking to wrangle enough conservative support to pass a stopgap measure Friday to keep the government running through Nov. 21. Senate Democrats, meanwhile, have pushed for concessions on health-care policy and plan to release an alternative funding plan soon.
