Republicans have a big and complicated agenda ahead, but they’re starting with a bill that should provide an early victory on one of the party’s signature issues.
In the first real week of legislating, the House and Senate lined up votes on the Laken Riley Act, a measure named for the 22-year-old nursing student murdered last year by an immigrant who had entered the country illegally.
The bill already united Republicans and divided Democrats, and touches on immigration, the signature issue throughout Donald Trump’s political career, including his most recent election win.
